Athens serves as a major charter hub for exploring Greece's vast coastline. Whether you base yourself in Piraeus or one of the surrounding ports like Lavrion or Volos, you have access to multiple sailing routes across the Aegean. The region offers a mix of island-hopping itineraries, mainland coastal sailing, and protected anchorages suitable for all experience levels.

Catamarans dominate the fleet here, offering the stability and space that appeals to families and groups chartering in Greek waters. The shallow-draft design is particularly valuable when navigating the variable seabed conditions around Greek islands. With a range of bareboat and skippered options available, you can choose the level of independence—or support—that matches your crew's experience.

Atlas anchorages and charter bases are spread across multiple starting points, so it's worth considering which departure location works best for your planned route and schedule.

The price of boat rentals in Athens can vary depending on the type of boat, the model chosen, the duration of the cruise and whether you opt for a skippered or bareboat charter, among other factors.

Prices range from €217 to €6,272 per day, with an average of €804 per day.

From Piraeus, you can reach the southern islands and the Saronic Gulf quickly. If you depart from Lavrion, you're positioned for longer island chains and the central Aegean. Northern bases like Volos and Preveza connect you to the Sporades and Ionian routes. Lefkada is ideal for exploring the Ionian coast, while eastern ports like Kavala serve the northern Aegean and approaches toward Turkey. Most routes combine coastal sailing with anchorage time—expect a mix of open-water passages and protected waters depending on your chosen itinerary.

The sailing season in Athens runs from April through October, with the strongest winds and clearest conditions typically arriving in summer. July and August bring the most reliable thermals, though they're also the busiest charter months. Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) offer steadier wind patterns with fewer crowds. Winter sailing is possible but less predictable, with occasional gale-force winds. Plan your charter around wind patterns and your crew's tolerance for heat; meltemia (northerly) winds dominate summer.

A skipper becomes valuable if your crew lacks Aegean-specific experience, wants to maximize sailing time instead of navigating, or prefers guided anchorage choices. The Aegean has distinct seasonal wind patterns, underwater obstacles, and port quirks that an experienced skipper navigates automatically. If you're chartering a larger catamaran (6+ cabins) or sailing unfamiliar routes, a skipper reduces onboard decision-making and often improves daily comfort. Skippered charters are also an option if licensing requirements feel like a barrier.

Catamarans are the clear choice for Athens-based charters. Their twin hulls provide stability in moderate Aegean swells, wider cabin layouts for groups, and shallow draft to access smaller harbors. Power catamarans are available if you want reliability in light-wind periods or prefer motoring to long sailing days. All hull types in the fleet here are suited to the region's conditions, but multihulls let you anchor further from shore and sleep larger groups comfortably.
